Iowa’s new congressmen have landed on key committees in the U.S. House of Representatives. Rob Blum, the Republican who will be Iowa’s first district congressman in January, will serve on the House Budget Committee and the Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

The Oversight Committee is the leading investigative arm for congress, holding hearings on a variety of topics and alleged scandals over the years. The House Budget Committee monitors the federal budget and spending.

It’s the House Appropriations Committee that writes the budget bills and Republican David Young, Iowa’s other Congressman-elect, announced last month that he would be serving on that committee. Young will represent the third congressional district and the current third district congressman, Republican Tom Latham, has served on the appropriations committee.

Blu’s office released this statement on his new assignments:

“It’s an honor to be chosen to serve the people of Iowa’s First District on these two committees,” said Blum. “As a small business owner who has balanced budgets throughout my career, I look forward to restoring some fiscal common sense through my work on the Budget Committee. I am also energized by the chance to hold the federal government accountable to the American people through my position on the Oversight Committee. Everyday Eastern Iowans are deeply concerned that politicians and bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. act as if they are above the law, and it’s my hope that this committee assignment will give those concerns a voice.”
