Cedar Rapids Police Officer Bret Sunner
A couple of inmates, serving life sentences for murder, have died in prison. The Iowa Department of Corrections reports 76-year-old Leonard Berg died Sunday of natural causes from coronary artery disease. He was discovered unresponsive in his cell at the Iowa State Penitentiary.
Berg was convicted in the 1984 killing of Cedar Rapids Police Officer Bret Sunner. Sunner was responding to a domestic disturbance call at the time.
Another inmate, assigned to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center, died on Saturday. Leroy Basham was 65 and died of lung cancer. Basham was serving a life sentence for a 1987 murder case in Boone County.
