Des Moines police shot and killed a man Wednesday following a credit union robbery and a chase. The Tradesman Credit Union was held up just after 9 A.M. and tellers gave a description of the gunman and his getaway car. A responding officer spotted the vehicle, which was stolen, and gave chase.

The suspect ditched the car and quickly carjacked an SUV at gunpoint and sped off again. He hit a parked car and took off on foot. Police say the suspect, 30-year-old Nicholas Brickman of Des Moines, pointed his gun at officers as he fled and one of them fired. Brickman died a short time later. The officer is on leave, which is standard.

Reports say Brickman had several previous convictions for burglary, theft and assault.
