The Morningside men’s basketball team looks to keep pace in the title race of the Great Plains Conference on Wednesday night by hosting Dordt College. At 13-3, the Mustangs trail league leading Dakota Wesleyan by a half game in the standings. Coach Jim Sykes’ team has won 14 of its last 15 with the lone loss coming at Dordt back on January seventh. Sykes says if they want to win the conference then they have to win this game.
There are four games remaining in the regular season but Sykes says the Mustangs are only focused on Dordt and he says this is the most important game to meet their end of season goal. Balance has been a key for Morningside. Five players average 10 or more points per game and as a team the Mustangs average more than 16 assists.
Morningside. is 21-3 overall and Sykes says unselfish play has been a big part of it. “Lately we’ve been pretty good at that and if we continue to move the ball and pass up good shots for great shots, I think that is going to bode well for us,” Sykes says.
Dordt is 8-8 in the GPAC and 17-9 overall.
