Iowa State junior Jameel McKay has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week. McKay averaged 10 points, 11 and a half rebounds and blocked seven shots as the Cyclones posted wins at Oklahoma State and Texas.

“The great think about having a rim protector back there is it erases mistakes. It gives you a little more room for error I gues on the perimeter if you get beat, you’ve got a guy back there who can erase a mistake, and we haven’t had that the last couple of years, “Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg.

He says the Cyclones have been at the bottome of the league when it comes to shot blocking, but McKay has turned that around. The Cyclones are up to 12th in the latest AP college basketball poll heading into Wednesday’s game at home against Baylor.
