Western Christian’s bid for a fourth straight 2A crown is still alive. The second ranked Wolfpack got 17 points from freshman center Ashtyn Veerbeek to hold off upset minded Iowa City Regina 50-45.

“She has about the last 7 or 8 games has really come into her own. She’s feeling so much more comfortable and she’s really coming into her own physically,” Western Christian coach Bill Harmsen Harmsen says he was not surprised Regina gave them a test as he says they are young team that is very dangerous because of their guards.

Regina closes out the season with a record of 21-4. The Regals lone senior Hanna Stein had 12 points. “It was hard knowing that it was my last basketball game. It has been such a fun year, I love all those girls, it sucks that we’re done, but it was a good year,”Stein says.

Regina fell behind by eight at the end of one but rallied to make a game of it. “I think we had a little big of butterflies at first, but once we got those out we were right with them, and just played hard,” Stein says.

Class 3A

Top ranked Mediapolis used a 14-0 third quarter run to take the lead for good in a 63-53 over Mount Vernon in a class 3A quarterfinal. Senior Andrea Larson led Mediapolis with 20 points. “It’s some good adversity to work through, coming from behind at half is something we haven’t really gone through and I think it really showed our true character and how much we wanted to win the game,” Larson says. She says they seemed to be a little tired mentally in the first half, but got it together in the second half.

Mount Vernon led by 7 early in the third quarter before the Bullettes made their run. “They dug deep and hit the shots they had to. They had a nice inside-outside game…for us to get this far and play this hard, I am very proud of our girls,” Mount Vernon coach Dennis Roloff said. The Mustangs end the season with a record of 16-9.
