Drake football coach Rick Fox says his second spring practice is off to a good start. A year ago Fox and some new assistants were installing their system on both sides of the ball. “There were changes last year in how we ran the offense and then obvious changes on defense with a new defensive coordinator…and all of that is so much more smooth this spring,” Fox says.

The Bulldogs finished 7-4 last season and only a three point loss at home to the University of San Diego prevented them from winning the Pioneer Football League title and playing in the FCS playoffs.

“We feel confident and we feel hungry. That game and the way it played out in losing it late the way we did left a bitter taste in our mouth. Our team is very, very hungry right now, we are confident. We know we could have accomplished our goals last year and we didn’t — so that makes us very hungry heading into this season,” Fox says.

Fox likes the potential for next season in part because of experience and the 18 fifth-year seniors who can provide leadership.
