Sheriff vehicleThe Denison man who was convicted last week in the killings of an elderly western Iowa couple is back in the news after the Crawford County Sheriff’s office says the man tried to flee from the county jail and assaulted a jail staff member.

As a result of the incident, 20-year-old Jayden Ray Chapman has been charged with assault on a jailer with the intent to commit a serious injury, and escape or attempt to escape a detention facility. Both charges are felonies.

Chapman is currently being held with no bond. Chapman was found guilty last week on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of reckless use of fire.

The murder convictions carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
