Dallas County jail plan fails to cross 60 percent threshold

August 5, 2015 By O. Kay Henderson

Sheriff-patrolFor the third time in two years, a bid to build a new jail in Dallas County has failed.

More than 5,300 people voted yesterday in Dallas County, which includes the cities of West Des Moines, Clive, Waukee, Dallas Center, Adel, Woodward and Granger. According to unofficial results posted on the Dallas County Auditor’s website, nearly 52 percent voted in favor of the plan to build a new county jail in Adel. The proposed bond issue failed, however, because such borrowing plans must get the approval of 60 percent of voters.

Also yesterday, voters in Polk City rejected a borrowing plan for construction of an aquatics center and 13 sports fields, as well as upgrades for existing baseball and softball diamonds in Polk City.
