Shellsburg man sentenced to federal prison for gun violation

August 5, 2015 By Dar Danielson

An eastern Iowa man will spend nearly four years in prison for pointing a shotgun at his girlfriend.

Forty-one-year-old Dennis Lee Kaplan of Shellsburg admitted to pointing the gun at his girlfriend in August of last year. He also pointed the gun at himself and then fired a shot into the air. Kaplan pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison. Kaplan had four other felony convictions and the judge said the fact that he placed himself and others at risk was one of many factors in the sentence.
