gavel-thumbnailA southeast Iowa woman has admitted to embezzling thousands of dollars while overseeing the payroll of several banks.

Fifty-year-old Heidi Wagler from Wayland pled guilty to one count of embezzlement by a bank officer in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Wagler admitted in a plea agreement that she took nearly $865,000 while she was an officer with Country Bancorporation. Wagler handled the payroll for 7 banks and admitted she paid herself more than she was supposed to be paid from each one of the banks during a nine-year period.

Her husband was the president of one of the banks and she also admitted that she paid him more money than he should have been paid.

Wagler is free while she waits for a sentencing date. She could be sentenced to a maximum of 30 years in prison, be ordered to pay back the money she took, and be fined twice the amount of the money taken.
