Protestors turn out at Board of Regents meeting over new U-I president (audio)

October 22, 2015 By Dar Danielson

Iowa-memorial-unionHundreds of students, instructors and others filled a ballroom at the University of Iowa Memorial Union Wednesday in a protest at the Board of Regents meeting.

They are angry about the hiring of the university’s new president, Bruce Harreld and Harreld’s lack of academic background.

They called for the resignation of Regents President Bruce Rastetter and the rest of the board members. They also delivered a petition calling for Harreld to step aside so a new search could be conducted. Rastetter stopped the meeting to receive their petition.

Earlier in the day a graduate student spoke out during a presentation. A student asked what the regents plan to do to get the U-I fully funded and asked why they would appoint a president who would not advocate for full funding of the school. Regent Larry McKibben of Marshalltown responded

The student continued pressing.

Other students step forward and started making presentations to end the back and forth in the morning portion of the meeting. The Board of Regents  will continue their meeting today in Iowa City.
