Police car lightsState troopers say a teenage girl from Des Moines was driving an SUV that went out of control on Interstate 80 near Newton on Tuesday afternoon, killing a mother and daughter.

Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Nathan Ludwig says the westbound vehicle driven by 14-year-old Bryneisha Watkins dropped onto the shoulder while passing a semi. She apparently over-corrected, causing the SUV to slide across the interstate and roll down the deep north ditch. Bryneisha’s 11-year-old sister was reportedly thrown from the vehicle.

Rescue crews had to use the jaws of life to get into the SUV, as the top was smashed down. Thirty-year-old Sabrina Watkins and her 13-year-old daughter Natasha Watkins died in the accident. Bryneisha and her 11-year-old sister were taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. No information is available about their current conditions. The accident remains under investigation.
