A bomb scare forced an evacuation in Newton Monday. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department reports the couple involved, 44-year-old David Kelso and 35-year-old Jennifer Kelso were both released after posting $300 bonds.
Currently, the only charges against them are possession of drug paraphernalia. But, additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.
Newton Police Lt. Wayne Winchell says the explosive device was found around 3:30 p.m., while a federal drug search warrant was being executed at the Kelso’s home.

Residents within a one block area were evacuated. The State Fire Marshal’s office is assisting with the investigation. Winchell says that agency’s bomb technicians were successful in rendering the suspected explosive device safe around 5:30 p.m. No description of the device has been released.
