Update: Ames police have identified the pedestrian killed this morning as 18-year-old EmmaLee J. Jacobs. Jacobs is an Iowa State University student from Urbana, Iowa.

Previous story:

Police in Ames say a young woman was killed this morning after she was hit by a car that left the scene. The victim is an 18-year-old Iowa State University student. Her name has not been released, but Ames Police Commander Jason Tuttle says she’s from the state of Iowa.

She was discovered lying in the roadway, at Lincoln Way and Ash Avenue, shortly after 7 a.m. by an ISU police officer. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

“Her injuries were consistent with being hit by vehicle, however, we haven’t found that vehicle and really don’t have any tips on the driver or the vehicle at this point,” Tuttle said.

It’s believed the pedestrian was struck by the vehicle sometime between 6:30 and 7:00. “We’re asking for the public’s help. If they were in that area during that time and they saw any suspicious vehicles or someone crossing the crosswalk at Lincoln Way and Ash, we would urge them to give us a phone call,” Tuttle said.

Officers are hoping surveillance cameras at nearby businesses can help them identify the suspect vehicle. “We don’t have any cameras on our traffic control devices, but our detectives are scouring the area today to determine if we can find any video of the incident,” Tuttle said.
