Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is applauding President Obama’s decision to use executive action to tighten federal gun laws.

“This is a very serious and urgent matter when you lose 90 people a day to gun violence,” Clinton said during a telephone interview with Radio Iowa. “…We’ve got to act.”

In October, after a mass shooting at an Oregon community college, Clinton promised that if she’s elected president, she would use executive authority to go as far as legally possible to close the so-called “gun show” loophole.

“I applaud the president for taking a hard look at that,” Clinton told Radio Iowa. “…But I don’t think that’s enough and I think we’re going to have to keep pushing forward on the political front and I intend to do that, to take on the gun lobby and to work with responsible gun owners, of which there are many millions who actually in large numbers support the common sense approaches that I’m advocating.”

Obama is set to meet with his attorney general on Monday to discuss his options. They reportedly include a new requirement that small-scale gun sellers conduct background checks. Clinton says congress should pass a law that reverses the “blanket immunity” that’s been given to gun manufacturers, plus she supports legislation that would forbid people on the “no-fly” list from buying guns.

A poll conducted after the terrorist attack in California found 47 percent of Americans opposed new gun control measures, while 42 percent said they support gun control. Clinton said it “depends on what people are asked” in a poll and she said it’s time to “focus political energy” on requiring “comprehensive background checks” when someone tries to buy a gun.

“We have to keep making the case about how we keep guns out of the wrong hands,” Clinton said. “Obviously that means we need more information in the data that ios reviewed from domestic abuse cases, for example; from commitments, for example. I think people are being cautious about what they think is achievable.”

Republican presidential candidates are criticizing President Obama’s reported move to enact new gun policies by executive order. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee on Saturday said Obama lacks the authority to make such a move.

“I know he taught constitutional law, but I wonder: ‘Did he ever read the document that he taught?’ Because he would understand that there is not only certain powers vested in the president, there are limitations to those powers,” Huckabee said in Winterset. “He doesn’t seem to think so.”

And Huckabee said Republicans in congress should do something, now, to stop Obama’s executive orders.

“Our own party has failed to do its constitutional duty to hold the president in check with over-reaching and over-powering decisions,” Huckabee said. “…I would like to think our congress would show up with a spine next week because they certainly didn’t before Christmas.”

Huckabee faults the Republican-led congress to passing a budget bill that increases spending and continues federal support of Planned Parenthood.
