The central Iowa man who was convicted of beating an elderly neighbor to death was sentenced today to a life prison term.

A judge found Ngor Makuey of Des Moines guilty of first-degree murder last month and he was sentenced in Polk County court.

Prosecutors say Makuey killed 97-year-old Rupert Anderson with a metal spatula after breaking into Anderson’s capitol city home in July of 2014.

Anderson’s 94-year-old wife, Harriet, was badly beaten in the attack and survived.

Makuey was 19 at the time of the crime.

He was sentenced to life in prison plus two years and was ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution.
