Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

Bernie Sanders has moved in front of Hillary Clinton in Iowa, according to a survey of likely Democratic Caucus goers by Quinnipiac University. Peter Brown, assistant director of the poll, says Sanders has the backing of 49-percent of those questioned, while 44-percent support Clinton.

“Given that Secretary Clinton had a solid 10-point lead over Senator Sanders in the last three Quinnipiac Polls in Iowa shows that things have changed,” Brown said. “Instead of a 10-point lead, she’s down five.”

The slim lead for Sanders in Iowa is fueled in large part to a gender gap. “Sixty-one percent of male likely Caucus goers say they’re supporting Mr. Sanders, compared to 30-percent supporting Secretary Clinton,” Brown said. “On the other side, Mrs. Clinton’s lead among women is 55-to-39-percent.”

Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley is a distant third in the poll with four-percent support. Among the Iowa Democrats surveyed in the latest poll, 20-percent who named a candidate they’re supporting said they might change their mind before the Caucuses on February 1.
