The National Park Service has placed four historic districts in Dubuque on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dubuque is Iowa’s oldest city. It now has 17 districts with more than 1300 buildings on the registry.

National Park Service records indicate some of the structures in those districts are in the Queen Anne Style which was popular in the 1700s and the Victorian Era in the 19th century.

The Fenelon Place neighborhood is located at the top of a bluff in Dubuque and in the 1890s an elevated cable car started providing service from the homes on the bluff to the city’s commercial center below. It saved people in the neighborhood an hour’s drive to and from work.

The movie F.I.S.T. features a scene in the Fenton Place Elevator cable car.
