ighsau-logo-300Mason City is headed to the class 4A championship game. The ninth ranked Mohawks raced out to a 17-point first half lead and beat fifth ranked Keokuk 57-45 in a semifinal round game.

Senior Makenzie Meyer led Mason City with 20 points, including 10-of-11 at the free throw line.

“Oh my gosh I can’t even describe the feeling”, said Meyer. “It is amazing.”

Mason City held off two Keokuk rallies in the second half. The Chiefs got to within four points in the third quarter and five in the fourth quarter.

“Their tempo on defense is strong. They gave us a ton of pressure but we kept our composure and knocked down free throws.”

Keokuk coach Michael Davis says he was proud of the way his team battled back in the second half.

“I give Mason city credit but I give our kids just as much credit:, said Davis. “We could have folded up in the first half but our kids don’t quit.”

Paige Kayvan led Keokuk with 14 points. The Chiefs end the season with a record of 22-3.
