Sheriff-patrolThe Crawford County Sheriff’s office has identified the suspect in a shooting in Schleswig.

The man is identified as 45-year-old James Scott Champion of Schleswig. Champion is still recovering at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Champion fired a round from a long gun at officers following a four-and-a-half hour standoff on March 9th. Crawford County Deputy Corey Utech returned fire, striking Champion twice in the chest.

Utech is an 11-year veteran of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office. He is currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Champion is facing two felony counts of assault on a peace officer with a dangerous weapon.
