UI-hospitalsAn initiative launched this week at the state’s largest hospital promotes a “quiet time” for patients.

The campaign at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics includes posters asking co-workers and guests to “hush” the noise level in inpatient units.

Emily Wynn, U-I Hospitals Interim Director of Clinical Functions, told KCRG-TV the new quiet time runs from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. each day.

“It really gives (patients) a time in the day where they can have their rest and relaxation without us bothering them,” Wynn said. During the quiet times, the inpatient units’ lights are dimmed and everyone is encouraged to speak in a quieter tone. Wynn says the idea for the quiet campaign was sparked by feedback from a survey of the hospital’s patients.

“They have a lot of tests and treatments going on while they’re here and we want to provide them with a quiet time each and every day, so they know it’s coming, they know it’s expected, and then it’s within the same place all over the organization,” Wynn told KCRG.

Hospital officials say they’re also looking at some equipment upgrades to make for a quieter workplace.
