An autopsy is scheduled for today as part of the investigation into the death of a Polk County Jail inmate.
Thirty-eight-year-old Lamont Walls was found unconscious in his cell late Friday afternoon and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Des Moines Police took Walls into custody last Wednesday on charges of probation violation and interference with official acts in a drug-related investigation.
According to police, Walls ran from officers as they tried to arrest him and he swallowed what they believed to be a bag of narcotics. When he was captured, police took Walls to a hospital and after an evaluation, he was released and transported to the jail.
The Iowa DCI is assisting the Polk County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.
