Maryland scored three runs in the top of the first inning and rode the five-hit pitching of Bran Shaffer to beat the Iowa Hawkeyes 4-1 in the final game of a Big Ten baseball series in Iowa City.
The Hawkeyes were denied a sweep after winning the first two games against the Terrapins.
“Today’s story is more about how well Brian Shaffer pitched against us”, said Iowa coach Rick Heller. “A nine inning complete game with 90 pitches. It was a masterpiece.”
Iowa’s lone run was scored in the bottom of the third via the long ball. Senior Eric Schenk-Joblinske slammed a 1-0 pitch over the fence in right field to make the score 4-1.
Iowa is 2-1 in the Big Ten and 9-12 overall. The Hawkeyes return to action Wednesday night at home against Northern Illinois.
