UNI softball goes back to basics

Northern Iowa softball coach Ryan Jacobs says his team has gone back to work in the cage this week as the Panthers get set to host Indiana State in a Missouri Valley Conference series.

UNI is 24-9 overall and 4-2 in the Valley but Jacobs says they are going back to work on hitting after scoring only nine runs in the past four games.

“You start getting into the grind of the season and you have 10 hour bus rides or you get a day off and you have to catch up on academics”, said Jacobs. “Some kids who were getting 100 swings are now getting 25 in a 15 batting practice session before a game and you lose that skill that you were really sharp on in January. We need to get back to that.”

Indiana State is 1-5 in the Valley after getting swept in a three game series against Drake last weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and close out the series with a single game on Sunday.
