Central is maturing and winning

Patience is paying off for Central College softball coach George Wares. After losing 10 seniors off last year’s squad that won the Iowa Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Division three regionals the Dutch opened this season with an abundance of youth and a lack of experience.

Six of Central’s top seven hitters are freshmen or sophomores.

“It is bad that they are young but nice that they are talented”, said Wares. “Slowly they are becoming sophomores and juniors even before this year is over.”

The Dutch have hit their stride as the Iowa Conference race started. They are 18-8 overall, including 4-0 in the league race heading into Wednesday’s doubleheader at Buena Vista.

Wares says while they have made a lot of progress there is a long ways to go to become a contender in a tough conference race.

“Luther is tremendously good with their pitching and we were fortunate to get a sweep at Simpson. Coe will be there and Buena Vista is much improved but Luther is clearly the favorite and we are all chasing them.”
