Sunset Stinkers
Second-graders at Sunset Heights Elementary School in Webster City are vowing to go without showers or baths for seven days starting on Saturday.
Dawn Scholtens is organizing the “shower strike” as about 120 kids and their teachers are pledging not to bathe for a week to raise money to dig wells in the African nation of Kenya. It’s the fifth year for the fundraiser at Sunset.
“They have built multiple wells in Kenya because of the generosity of lots of people who are doing the shower strike,” Scholtens says. “Each year, when they go to build the new wells, they also go back and check the wells that were put in place before, to make sure they’re still running.” The school team is known as the Sunset Stinkers and a host of related projects are underway.
“All of the 2nd graders are learning about the animals of Kenya and the food and the schools and the people,” she says. “They all chose what they wanted to learn about. We’ve made a lot of iMovies and keynote projects and books.” The school goal is to raise $5,000. Learn more at www.showerstrike.org.
