Iowan among 58 who have sentences shortened by Obama

May 6, 2016 By O. Kay Henderson

President Obama has granted early release to a woman from Des Moines who’s doing time in federal prison on a drug charge.

Tomma Jean Kent was convicted of distributing methamphetamine. She was sentenced to 20 years in prison. She’s served about nine years and President Obama has commuted her sentence. It means May 5, 2016, is the end date of her sentence.

Obama has been acting to commute the sentences of non-violent offenders, part of his public push for criminal sentencing reform.
