Cedar Rapids police release name of man injured by explosive device

May 23, 2016 By Dar Danielson

Police-security-vestCedar Rapids police are still investigating after a man was injured in an explosion in his apartment and several parts for explosive devices were found.

Police say 46-year-old Gerald Robert LeGrand was the man taken to the hospital after the explosion Friday in his apartment on the northeast side of the city. Spokesman Greg Buelow says LeGrand’s injuries were serious

“He was transported to St. Lukes and then air-lifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics with essentially life-threatening and traumatic injuries,” Buelow says. A current condition report is not available due to medical privacy laws. The ATF is helping with the investigation and Cedar Rapids Police

“To try to determine exactly what LeGrands was attempting to do. And also, how many devices and whether or not there is anything more to this investigation. All those components of a very active investigation are occurring at this time,” according to Buelow. He says they have sent parts of the improvised explosive devices to the ATF for lab analysis. No state or federal charges have been filed.
