Vote-here-largeNext Tuesday is Primary Election Day and a northeast Iowa county doesn’t have an auditor.

Clayton County Auditor Dennis Freitag left a note on his desk Thursday morning saying he has decided to retire. He’s been the Clayton County auditor for nearly 40 years. Freitag had been accused of shirking his duties. He said he’d been his wife’s full-time caregiver and her condition was such he had to work from home. She died in February.

The Iowa Attorney’s General’s Office announced in January they would not seek Freitag’s removal after an investigation. The Iowa Secretary of State’s Office said they’ve been assured by Clayton County elections officials the county has everything under control for Tuesday’s primary. The county supervisors will discuss the vacancy on Monday.
