Woman accused in fatal drunk driving wreck arrested again

June 17, 2016 By Matt Kelley

Police car lightsA Des Moines woman who is facing charges in a double-fatal OWI crash last November was arrested for drunk driving again last Friday in southern Iowa’s Lucas County.

Fifty-three-year-old Deanna Gliem was stopped in Chariton and Lucas County Sheriff Brett Tharp says Gliem was well above the legal limit of .08 blood alcohol. “She was administered a preliminary breath test…and the results of that were .112,” Tharp said.

Gliem is awaiting trial in connection with a November 17 crash in Des Moines that killed 60-year-old Richard Hummel and 59-year-old Randall Sonnenburg. In that case, Gliem is charged with two counts of vehicular homicide-operating under the influence and vehicular homicide-reckless driving. Tharp said he was surprised when he learned about who his deputies arrested.

“I was astonished, honestly, that she was out driving…I was pretty concerned that she would be driving again while intoxicated after that previous incident,” Tharp told Radio Iowa.

Gliem’s trial for the Des Moines crash is scheduled for September 12.
