A young but experienced baseball team at Estherville Lincoln Central has raced out to a 16-0 start to the season. The Midgets top four leaders in hits are all sophomores and every win on the mound has been recorded by a sophomore or freshman.

Coach Lee Evans’ team is ranked fourth in class 3A in the latest Radio Iowa/Coaches poll heading into tonight’s game at Spirit Lake.

“We are fairly young grade wise but these guys have played a lot of baseball”, said Evans. “We did have a key injury to one of our senior outfielders who is lost for the season due to a knee injury but we have had some other guys step in and step up and do a good job for us.”

The Midgets are finding ways to win close games. Four of their last seven wins have been decided by one run. Another key has been a balanced lineup that is averaging .323 while opponents are hitting at a .182 clip.

As the winning streak has grown so has the confidence level.

“They have a little extra hip in their hop and these kids are fun to be around. They are baseball guys and hold each other accountable.”
