DNR identifies Lucas woman as victim in fatal horse accident

July 11, 2016 By Matt Kelley

AmbulanceA woman who was killed over the weekend in a horseback riding accident in southern Iowa has been identified.

It happened around 2 p.m. Saturday in Stephens State Forest near Lucas. Kevin Baskins, spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says at the time of the incident, the equestrian trails at Stephens State Forest were closed due to wet conditions.

“We believe it happened in an area with somewhat of an incline and it looked like the horse lost its footing,” Baskins said. The woman, 58-year-old Carole Renaud of Lacona, was riding with a friend at the time.

Renaud was airlifted to a Des Moines hospital, where she later died.
