Rivals collide as Bettendorf hosts Assumption

Old rivals collide in the Quad Cities as class 4A ninth ranked Bettendorf hosts a Davenport Assumption team that is ranked 10th in class 3A. Bettendorf is in bounce back mode after being on the receiving end of a rare drubbing at second ranked West Des Moines Valley. A flurry of errors led to a big early deficit in a 49-13 loss.

“Look everybody realizes that game is over and you can’t take it back but by the same token there is a lot of season left”, said Bettendorf coach Aaron Wiley. “We talked to our kids about how every goal they had at the start of the year is still there but that being said we have got to play a lot better.”

It is now a non-district game but it used to be the biggest game of the season when both schools were part of the Mississippi Athletic Conference.

Assumption opened with a 35-21 win over North Scott and coach Wade King says it remains a rivalry.

“It is in our community certainly”, said Kind. “We have always been the small school in the conference and the opportunity to play a school like Bettendorf year in and year out just makes our program better. I would say yes it is still a rivalry to us.”
