Student leaders at Iowa State University are asking the Board of Regents to investigate the use of university airplanes by the school’s president.

The Iowa State Daily reports the ISU student government passed a resolution during their meeting Wednesday night that asks the Regents to formally look into President Steven Leath’s past and current use of the university aircraft. The issue arose after it was revealed that Leath had damaged a university airplane he was flying during a fueling stop in Illinois.

Leath said he followed university policy in using the aircraft. The report says Leath talked to students before the vote and urged them not to pass the resolution as a board investigation would take resources away from other more important things.

The executive director of the Board of Regents issued a news release Wednesday announcing that he had asked the chief auditor to review of policies regarding use of equipment and travel at each of the three state universities. The release says they will review the policies to ensure they are clear and consistent, and that policies and state law were followed.
