Blast & fire damage SW Iowa ethanol plant, one hurt

October 10, 2016 By Matt Kelley

fire-truckOne person was critically hurt in a weekend explosion and fire at an ethanol plant in Council Bluffs.

An official with the Southwest Iowa Renewable Energy or SIRE plant says a tanker truck was being filled with ethanol at the facility late Friday when the fire broke out.

The exact cause isn’t clear.

The truck driver, who’s name wasn’t released, was badly burned. He was flown to a hospital in Omaha in critical condition.

Multiple fire departments responded to the blaze, which required a special foam to extinguish.

Damage to the SIRE plant is still being assessed.
