Denison man shot by own gun on hunting trip

October 19, 2016 By Dar Danielson

AmbulanceA Denison man was accidentally shot by his own pistol Monday while on his way to hunt.

The Iowa  DNR says 51-year-old Daniel Gehling was carrying a pistol in his waistband as he began walking to a field to hunt deer with his muzzleloader in southern Crawford County. He reached down to adjust the pistol and it went off — hitting him in the thigh.

The accident happened around 5 p.m. and Gehling’s wife Carolyn was with him and applied pressure to the wound until help arrived. He was taken to the Denison hospital and then flown to the Omaha Medical Center for surgery.

The DNR says Gehling was in stable condition after the surgery.
