Debates tonight in two of Iowa’s four congressional districts

October 26, 2016 By O. Kay Henderson

Vote-buttonWith Election Day growing ever closer, political activity in the state is intensifying.

Tonight, candidates in two of Iowa’s four congressional districts will debate on live television. Republican Congressman Rod Blum of Dubuque and Cedar Rapids City Councilwoman Monica Vernon, his Democratic opponent, will debate for 90 minutes. It starts at 7 p.m. on KCRG television. It’s the one and only debate between those two candidates in the first congressional district.

Third district Congressman David Young, a Republican from Van Meter, and Democratic challenger Jim Mowrer of Des Moines will debate at 8 p.m. on Iowa Public Television. It’s their second debate of the week.

These two congressional races are among the top targets for Democrats hoping to gain majority control of the U.S. House. President Obama released written statements earlier this week endorsing both Vernon and Mowrer. Ad spending has ramped up in both districts.

Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence will headline a rally in Fort Dodge tomorrow. On Friday, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will make stops in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines.
