auditor-logoThe state auditor’s special investigation of accounts from an eastern Iowa jail has found tens of thousands of dollars in undeposited room and board fees from inmates.

Doug Boulton was the assistant jail administrator in Muscatine County for 15 years. Boulton was placed on leave in January of this year after colleagues raised concerns. He was fired in March.

Auditors were able to review accounting records for the last three years of Boulton’s employment with the county. The review concludes more than $82,000 in room and board fees from inmates in a work release program were not deposited. The tally could be higher or lower than that, but State Auditor Mary Mosiman says there just weren’t adequate records for all transactions.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation asked the auditor’s office to conduct this review. The auditor’s report has been forwarded to the Muscatine County Attorney and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office as well as the DCI.
