Autopsy results released for Mason City murder victims

November 23, 2016 By Matt Kelley

Crime-scene-300x243Autopsies show the victims of a double murder in Mason City were stabbed and shot.

The bodies of 54-year-old Melinda Kavars and 37-year-old Caleb Christensen were found at 2:30 a.m last Thursday inside Christensen’s home. Thirty-year-old Peter Veal of Lake Mills was arrested a short time later and is facing two counts of first-degree murder.

Mason City Police say autopsies show Christensen died from “multiple sharp-force injuries,” while Kavars died of a single gunshot wound to the neck and chest. Police have discussed a possible motive in the case or if the suspect knew the victims..

Veal is due back in court for an arraignment hearing on December 6.
