Hunters can help feed the hungry by donating deer

November 23, 2016 By Matt Kelley

deer-in-snowDeer hunters in the state are urged to consider taking part in a program that benefits needy Iowans.

Iowa’s HUSH program is now in its 13th year. HUSH stands for Help Us Stop Hunger. The program is funded by hunters, who pay a dollar surcharge with each deer tag purchase.

Hunters can donate their deer to HUSH, which works with 81 participating lockers to provide deer meat to the Food Bank of Iowa. During last year’s hunting season, more than 3,300 deer were donated, generating over 604,000 meals for needy Iowa families.

The first of Iowa’s two shotgun deer seasons opens on December 3.
