A southern Iowa man killed in a hunting accident Sunday was apparently shot by another person in the large group he was with near Lake Red Rock. Iowa Department of Natural Resources spokesman Alex Murphy says 23-year-old Blake Schroder, of Leighton, died at the scene.
“A group of (hunters) were pushing a deer toward other members of the party and it seems another member of the hunting party fired a shot that fatally struck Blake,” Murphy said.
DNR conservation officers were notified of the incident at Robert’s Creek Park at 4:30 p.m. Sunday. In a news release about the accident, the DNR included several safety reminders for hunters. “The most important thing to take away from this is to know exactly where each member of your party is when you are hunting,” Murphy said. “Then, also, before you take any shots, make sure you know where your target is…and you know the surroundings of that.”
Murphy said the investigation into the shooting continues and an autopsy is scheduled for today at the State Medical Examiner’s office.

Iowa DNR conservation officers were called to Robert’s Creek Park on the north side of Lake Red Rock around 4:30 p.m. They found a man dead, apparently struck by a round fired from a member of his large hunting party
The victim is identified as 23-year-old Blake Schroder of Leighton.
