State regulators have approved an increase in the rates for Alliant Energy electric and gas customers.
Wisconsin-based Alliant Energy provides electricity to half a million customers in Iowa. According to the Iowa Utilities Commission, its decision will let Alliant increase the average monthly charge for residential customers to $15.50 per month. That’s a 19% increase. Total yearly revenue from Alliant’s 225,000 natural gas customers will be allowed to grow by $10 million.
Alliant filed for rate increases about a year ago and said it needed some of the additional revenue to strengthen the power grid and move lines underground to reduce outages. More than a quarter of a million Alliant customers lost power due to the August 2020 derecho.
