Officials say a teenage girl is now charged in the shooting death of a child in southeast Iowa.
First responders were called to a rural home in Jefferson County near Libertyville in May, after a caller to 911 said a girl had been shot in the head.
Seven-year-old Jean Grey Irvin was rushed to a local hospital, then to Iowa City where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators with the sheriff’s office and the Iowa DCI say it was initially thought the gunshot may’ve been accidental or self-inflicted, but they now say it was intentional.
An unidentified girl, who was 14 at the time, was charged Thursday with second-degree murder as a juvenile, though the county attorney says a decision will be made shortly to determine if she should be tried in adult court.
