The soggy September is wrapping up with more of the same, as Iowa’s forecast calls for rain and more rain for the next few days.

Meteorologist Elliott Morrow, at the National Weather Service, says at least 61 counties across western and central Iowa will be under a flood watch starting tonight, as heavy showers are likely.

“We do have a flood watch that’s going into effect through late Thursday night, with two to four inches of rain expected, with locally higher amounts likely,” Morrow says. “It’s going to be multiple rounds with of heavy rain across the state and we got additional rain even now possible through Thursday night as well.”

Morrow says a powerful storm that hit Mexico on Monday will likely be contributing to Iowa’s rainfall woes this week.

“We do have the remnants of that Hurricane Polo, which is starting to make its way in the Baja California region, affecting areas down in Texas and New Mexico,” Morrow says, “and that same area down there getting affected by the rain, it’s going to be affecting up here to our region and that’s where we’re going to get a lot of that rain.”

Once the rain ends late Thursday, the forecast calls for dry weather through the weekend. The month is expected to end as one of the wettest Septembers on record.
