Massachusetts Senator John Kerry is the latest Democratic presidential candidate to unveil a plan extend health care coverage to more Americans. Kerry discussed the details during a 35-minute speech this morning in Des Moines. Kerry says his plan will reduce the cost of health care for all Americans and ensure insurance coverage for every child in America. Kerry’s plan expands existing government programs and seeks cost-controls. It also extends a break to businesses that provide health benefits for their workers by having the government pick up the cost for any catastrophic health incident for an employee that costs 50-thousand dollars or more. Kerry says the issue is part of the “great unfinished business of our society” and “central” to his campaign. Kerry says under George Bush’s watch, more than one million Americans are losing their health insurance each year. Kerry calls his plan both bold and responsible, and he says it builds on what works and fixes what doesn’t. Kerry would pay for his plan by canceling some of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and ending some corporate tax gimmicks. Three other Democratic candidates have unveiled health care plans of their own.
