A Clinton attorney who lost his law license earlier this year has been sentenced in federal court. The Iowa Supreme Court revoked the license of Steven Mayer in August as he awaited sentencing on a federal charge he took and cashed more than $30,000 worth of Social Security checks from his dead mother. Mayer pleaded guilty to charges in March. He’ll serve four months at a work release center in Davenport and four months of home confinement. He’s ordered to pay 72-thousand dollars restitution. Mayer had practiced law 25 years.
