Governor Tom Vilsack goes to Washington, D-C tomorrow to talk about the new Farm Bill. Vilsack, who’s chair of the Midwest Governor’s Association, says the 12 governors in the nation’s midsection hope to see some sort of “safety net” for farmers which would provide steady federal payments when there’s a downturn in prices or a bad growing year.Vilsack and the other Midwestern governors will meet with farm leaders in Congress as well as Bush Administration officials. The group will present the policymakers a 25-page position paper, which includes a call for more aggressive trade initiatives.Iowa’s Tom Harkin, chair of the Senate Ag Committee, is pressing to pass a new Farm Bill yet this year, but Vilsack expects the farm bill debate to stretch into next year.Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura had concerns about the language about trade policy in the governors’ position paper, and Ventura did not sign it. The 13 Midwest Governors will meet in D-C on Tuesday and Wednesday.
