The American Legion celebrates the opening of a new post building in Des Moines today. Legion District Commander Roy Cooley says there aren’t many new post buildings going up.Post members have to raise their own money to build the new buildings, so there are fewer being built. He says it took four years to raise the money for this building. The number of veterans has decreased as those who served in World War Two die. Cooley says the Des Moines Post has done a good job of overcoming that problem.and is 27-percent over their membership goal. Cooley says the American Legion Posts are an important resource for America’s veterans, and they are also involved in many activities that help those in their communities. The grand opening of the new Des Moines Post 731 begins today with a breakfast and events will continue throughout the day. The events are open to the public.
