Tenants of a Cedar Rapids apartment building are back home after a standoff forced them to evacuate last night. Police evacuated the Commonwealth Apartments last night as a precaution following a man’s threat that he’d blow up the building. Officers were confronted by William Kelly during what appeared to be a domestic dispute. Kelly threatened to harm himself and cut a gasoline in the building. Cops could smell the strong odor of gas coming from Kelly’s apartment, so they called in utility crews to cut off gas and electrical service to the building. All other tenants were evacuated. About two hours later, a special police team entered the apartment and took Kelly to the hospital for treatment of self-inflicted wounds. He’ll also undergo a mental evaluation.
